How to use it

Which type should I convert to?
JPG works everywhere and gives small files for photos, which makes it the safest choice for email, forms and uploads. PNG keeps sharp edges and transparency, so it suits logos, screenshots and diagrams. WebP is usually the smallest of the three and is supported by every current browser, but some older apps and websites still refuse to accept it, which is the usual reason people convert WebP to JPG.
Converting PNG to JPG
JPG can't store transparency, so any see-through parts of a PNG are filled with white. For photos and screenshots this makes little difference, and the file is often many times smaller. If you need to keep the transparent background, convert to WebP or leave it as PNG.
Will I lose quality?
Converting to JPG or WebP is lossy: the picture is compressed, so a tiny amount of detail is discarded. At 85% or above you're unlikely to see a difference. Converting to PNG is lossless, but going from JPG to PNG can't bring back detail that JPG already threw away, so the file simply gets bigger. Converting a JPG to JPG again slightly lowers the quality each time, so keep your originals.
What about HEIC, GIF and other types?
Browsers can't open HEIC photos (the iPhone default) yet. On an iPhone, choose Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible, or export the photo as a JPG from the Photos app first. Animated GIFs aren't supported here because a converted GIF would lose its animation.
