How it's worked out
Tip = bill × tip %. Total = bill + tip. Each person pays the total divided by the number of people. The shares are rounded to the penny, so they can differ by a penny when added back together.
What is a normal tip?
- UK: 10 to 12.5% if service is not already included
- USA: 15 to 20%
- Much of Europe: rounding up or 5 to 10%
Customs vary, and a discretionary service charge added to the bill already counts as your tip.
Splitting unevenly
If one person ate far less, split the drinks and mains separately: run the calculator once per group with its own bill amount.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a 15% tip?
Multiply the bill by 0.15. On £80 that is £12.
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people.
Is the service charge the tip?
If a service charge is on the bill, it normally replaces a tip. Check before adding another.
Does it round each person's share?
Shares are shown to the penny. Expect differences of a penny when paying in cash.
