Forms and websites often say things like “photo must be under 100 KB”. Choose your target size and this tool finds the best-looking picture that fits: it lowers the quality just enough, and only makes the picture smaller if it has to.
Everything happens in your browser. Your pictures are never uploaded, and the location and camera details hidden inside photos are removed.
How to use it
- Drop your images onto the box, or click it to choose them (up to 20 at a time).
- Type the biggest file size you're allowed, in KB. For 1 MB, type 1024.
- Choose JPG (works everywhere) or WebP (often smaller), then press Compress images.
- Download each picture, or all of them as a ZIP. The result shows the quality used and the new size.
How it fits a picture under your limit
A picture's file size depends on its pixel dimensions and on the quality setting. This tool first tries high quality, then searches between high and low quality for the highest setting that still fits your limit. If even the lowest sensible quality is too big, it shrinks the picture by 15% and tries again, repeating until it fits, so you always get the largest, sharpest picture the limit allows.
Common size limits
Online forms, job portals, passport and visa photo uploads and email systems often set limits of 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB. Note that 1 MB is 1,024 KB. Check whether the limit also specifies pixel dimensions; this tool changes the dimensions only as a last resort, so for an exact pixel size use the image resizer first.
JPG or WebP?
JPG is accepted almost everywhere and suits photos. WebP usually gives a smaller file at the same quality, but some forms and older programs don't accept it, so pick JPG unless you know WebP is allowed. PNG isn't offered because it can't be compressed to a chosen size without changing the picture.
When the limit can't be met
Very small limits on large, detailed pictures may not be reachable without making the picture tiny. The tool stops before it becomes unusable (around 100 pixels) and tells you the smallest size it could reach, so you can decide whether to allow a higher limit.
